Baculoviral Expression Vector Systems (BEVS) provide cost-effective alternatives to mammalian systems, while retaining features of higher eukaryotes that lead to greater fidelity of post-translational modification(s) and (if desired) efficient secretion from the cell.

In BEVS, as in most eukaryotes, endogenous SUMO proteases rapidly cleave SUMO fusions in vivo, precluding the use of the traditional SUMO tag for enhancement of expression and facilitation purification of the protein-of-interest (POI). To remedy this problem, LifeSensors developed SUMOstar -- a novel fusion tag which is resistant to cleavage by endogenous SUMO proteases.
